Gents Soccer Shutout by Oakland, 4-0
Saturday, September 25, 2004

ROCHESTER, MI.- The Centenary Gents were unable to snap Oakland’s five-game unbeaten streak on Saturday afternoon in Rochester. The Golden Grizzlies' shut out the Gents 4-0, in their first conference match of the year.

In a very fast paced, aggressive match, Oakland’s Jim Denk was able to drive it past goalie James Speed in the 35th minute to put the first point on the board. The first half ended with Oakland outshooting the Gents 10-2 as they entered the break leading 1-0.

Looking to even the score, the Gents challenged Oaklands’ defense by tripling their shots on goal in the second half lead by freshman Ben Caldarera and senior Jeffrey Krulin. Caldarera had an opportunity to tie the game on a break away in the 51st minute, but the ball hit the post and bounced out of play. Minutes later, freshman Alex McDonald received a pass from Nick Nelson and pushed it to the back of the net to give the Golden Grizzlies a two point advantage.

With a less than 25 minutes left in the second half, Grizzlies senior Bret McNabb received a red card giving the Gents a one-man advantage. Playing one man down did not stop Oakland’s aggressive offense as they scored their third goal in the 79th minute and were able to score again with 10 seconds left on the clock.

The Gents continue their weekend road trip, staying in Michigan to challenge first time opponent Detroit on Sunday at 12 p.m.
