Ladies Tennis Successful First Day at SFA Invitational

NACOGDOCHES, TEX. – Competing in their second tournament of the spring season, the Centenary Ladies had a successful first day at the Stephen F. Austin Invitational on Saturday in Nacogdoches.

Junior Anja Schmidt came out strong leading the Ladies capturing two victories over Louisiana Tech’s Monica Kelly in a quick 6-3, 1-6 match and overpowered Northeastern Oklahoma’s Holley McKee 6-1, 6-4. Fellow junior Heather Kelley notched a win over NEOK’s Katie Westbrook 6-1, 7-6, but was surpassed by Lamar’s Kendall Gibbs 6-0, 6-2. The third member of the Centenary’s trio, Christine Majchowicz had a disappointing morning falling short in both matches.

The Ladies doubles team of Schmidt and Kelley missed posting their second win succumbing to Louisiana Tech’s Sahara Uriarte and April Martinez 8-4. Due to rain the Ladies were only able to play one round of doubles.

The Ladies will finish out the tournament on Sunday at the SFA Tennis Courts.
