Thursday, October 21, 2004

SHREVEPORTThe Centenary Ladies volleyball team won its third straight match this season over Prairie View A&M, downing the Lady Panthers 30-24, 30-24, 30-27 in the Gold Dome on Thursday evening. The match was the first of three consecutive for the Ladies who will host Valparaiso and Oakland on Friday and Saturday in back-to-back Mid-Con tilts.

Centenary (6-20) received a boost from Kelley Heckman who returned to the lineup Thursday after missing almost a month with an injury. The junior immediately made her presence felt by leading the team in digs with 16 in the victory, furthering her school-record career total to 1,044 digs in just over two seasons. Fellow junior Catey Batte followed suit with the defensive intensity as she racked up 13 digs in the contest.

Offensively, the Ladies were led by Ashley Templer’s 12 kills on 32 attempts. Tracee Byrd also found several holes in the Prairie View block defense as she totaled 11 kills in the win. Emily Longerot played well, especially on the right side, as she finished with seven kills while Heckman contributed eight kills. Lindsay Bekelja led Centenary with 34 assists and three service aces.

Prairie View (8-19) received a good effort from Tamika Neuman as she paced the Lady Panther offense with 12 kills while committing only three errors. The rest of the PVAM offense was held in check by a determined Centenary team that never allowed the visitors a chance to gain the momentum.

The Ladies’ match with Valparaiso will begin at 5 pm in the Gold Dome on Friday while Saturday’s contest with Oakland will start at 7 pm.
