Gents Tennis Unable to Win at ITA South Central Regional

AUSTIN, Tex. –The Centenary Gents tennis team got off to a rough start at the Wilson/ITA Men's South Central Championships at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center on Friday. The Gents were unable to pull out a win in a series of difficult matches.


Junior Arthur Okura played hard in a grueling match early Friday morning, but was overtaken by Martin Knobloch of TSU, 7-6, 6-4.  Okura was unable to bounce back that afternoon as Prairie View’s Kudzai Chiridza posted a 6-2, 7-5 victory in the first round of consolation play. 


Both Brian Roberts and Russ Patrick faced tough competition, falling to their opponents 6-0, 6-0 in their first showing of the season.   Both players have a chance to comeback, receiving first-round byes in the consolation round which begins Saturday morning.


In doubles action, Okura and Patrick teamed to face Okura’s prior tournament opponent, losing their first match of the season, 8-2 to TSU’s Oscar Castenada and Martin Knobloch.


Schools participating in the tournament are Baylor, Lamar, Louisiana-Lafayette, UT-Pan American, Rice, SMU, TEXAS, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, TCU, Texas Southern, Texas Tech, UT-Arlington, UT-San Antonio.  Tournament play continues through Monday.
