SHREVEPORT—The Chicago State Cougars held off a hard-charging Centenary Ladies volleyball team in game one of the match on Friday evening in the Gold Dome to take the contest 3-0. The Cougars downed the Ladies by scores of 30-28, 30-23, 30-15 to keep their chances alive at a Mid-Continent Conference Tournament berth.

Centenary (6-29, 0-13 Mid-Con) surprised the visiting Cougars in the opening game, controlling play throughout to take a 22-18 lead. However, after a timeout, Chicago State regrouped and stormed back to win the game in large part to superior hitting. Alison West, Katie Zillner, and Shakeila Castile-Jones each tallied five kills in the opening victory as CSU hit for a .273 kill percentage.

Chicago State (12-18, 7-6 Mid-Con) jumped out to a 6-0 advantage in the second game, only to have the Ladies close within two points at 23-21 on a kill by Tracee Byrd. Back-to-back aces by Lakeisha Davis widened the Cougar lead and another ace by Catherine Everist closed out the game. West continued to be the driving force behind the Cougar offense as she recorded seven more kills in game two.

The Ladies again took an early lead in the final game at 6-4 only to see Chicago State reel off 13 consecutive points behind the serving of West. The rally finally ended when Chrissy Davis misguided her attack attempt into the net. With the score at 17-7, Centenary would not be able to muster enough momentum to complete the comeback as the Cougars took the game 30-15.

Davis, who came on strong in the last game, finished with a match-high 17 kills to pace Chicago State. West added 13 kills in the win while Castile-Jones and Zillner contributed 11 kills and 10 kills respectively.

Tracee Byrd led the Centenary offensive charge with 11 kills, but Shayla Andreas and Stephanie Scanlan each played well despite limited opportunities. Andreas notched five kills with only one error while Scanlan recorded three kills without a mistake. Ashley Templer dug a match-high 20 balls and Catey Batte concluded the night with 18 digs.

Centenary will closeout the 2004 season on Sunday when the Ladies host IUPUI in the Gold Dome at 12 pm.
