Tuesday, December 21, 2004

NATCHITOCHES, LA. – Northwestern State’s dominating defense proved to be too much for the Ladies on Tuesday afternoon at Prather Coliseum. Poor shooting in the first half paralyzed the Ladies on the floor, leading to the 79–55 defeat.

The defending Southland Conference Champions came out of the gate strong, piling up a 14-0 run through the first five minutes. Northwestern (5-3) converted on 15-of-42 field goal attempts compared to just 7-of-32 for Centenary in the first half. The Lady Demons built a double-digit lead in the scoring column at the break, mounting a 38-17 advantage.

The Ladies (1-8) came out of the locker room determined to bounce back and began gnawing away at the deficit. An offensive spurt fueled by Holli Wilkins’ trio of wide-open threes midway through the second half cut the lead to 61-50. Northwestern kept the lead in double-figures en route to the win, thanks to 39 points from the bench.

Whitney Rushing finished the afternoon with 19 points and nabbed eight rebounds, while Wilkins added 16 points and Laura Kizyte notched 14 for Centenary.

The Ladies will take a holiday break, returning home to host in-state rival Louisiana-Monroe Dec. 30th at the Gold Dome. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
