SHREVEPORT – Entering the 2004-05 Mid-Continent Conference season on a nine game losing streak, Centenary’s schedule did them no favors as they hosted defending Mid-Con tournament champion and pre-season favorite Valparaiso, falling 79-56.

Five Crusaders (7-5, 1-0) scored in double figures led by Tamra Braun with 13.  Lauren Bechtold added 12 while Jenna Stagler, Betsy Rietema, and Carrie Myers all scored 10.  Meredith Baugher grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and finished with nine points.

Junior Laura Kizyte paced the Ladies (1-10, 0-1) with 13 points and was joined by sophomore Holli Wilkins in double-figures with 10.  Wilkins nabbed seven steals as Centenary forced the Crusaders to a season-high 23 turnovers.

Valparaiso started the contest by converting on a pair of free throws after Centenary was whistled for a technical foul after failing to report their lineup on time.  The Crusaders used the instant momentum to go on a 10-0 run in the first three minutes before a Wilkins’ three put the Ladies on the board.

After another 11-0 run by Valparaiso, Centenary faced a 19-point halftime deficit before Laura Way’s steal and layup in the waning moments of the period trimmed the Crusader lead to 17.  Way finished with a career-high eight points.

Though undersized and unable to keep up with Valpo on the glass, the Ladies entered the intermission matching the Crusaders shot-for-shot from downtown.  Valparaiso outshot Centenary from the floor in the first stanza 56.7 percent to 45.8 while both squads hit 57.1 percent of their shots from behind the arc.

The second half saw more back-and-forth action as the Crusaders maintained a 20-point lead for the majority of the second half.  The Ladies couldn’t keep up their first half shooting percentage, from the floor or from downtown, and finished the night shooting below 40 percent.

The Ladies continue Mid-Con play as they host Chicago State on Wednesday at the Gold Dome.  Centenary split contests with the Lady Cougars last season, including their first ever conference win, 72-63.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
