SHREVEPORT- By taking advantage of a series of errors in the first contest and blasting three homeruns in the second, Southern Utah swept a doubleheader from the Centenary Ladies 10-2 and 8-3 Friday night at the Centenary Softball Complex.

The Thunderbirds knocked in two runs in their first at-bat thanks to a pair of miscues by Centenary’s infield.

The Ladies chipped away at the two-run lead when Megan Hall plated Lauren Flowers, who hit a double to lead off the inning, in the bottom of the first.

SUU mirrored their first at-bat in the top of the second, rallying with two outs as Tiffany Burt clubbed a shot to centerfield followed by Erin Neiderhauser’s double to the same spot. Both runners came in on Kristen Carmichael’s infield single for the 4-1 lead.

The T-birds stretched the lead to 8-1 when Jentry Johnson hit a bases loaded dinger off relief pitcher Janis Kelley in the top of the fourth.

Centenary’s Micah Rhodes answered that homerun with one of her own as she led off the Ladies in the next rotation.

Both teams played exceptional defense in the fifth, keeping the score at 8-2.

Pitcher Jessica Ivins re-entered the game with no outs and runners on first and second as Amy Sauer singled to leftfield, loading the bases. Ivins walked the next two batters, plating Carmichael and Johnson for the game.

The Ladies regrouped for the second contest and took an early lead thanks to Lory Kowaleski’s sacrifice fly, which allowed Davis to tag-up for the first run of the game.

Carmichael tied the game in the fourth with her seventh homerun of the year followed by four more runs, including Bobbi Jo Merrill’s solo homerun to make the score 5-1.

Centenary countered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Thunderbirds retired three consecutive batters in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

Amy Sauer picked up both wins for SUU allowing five runs on 11 hits over 13 innings, while striking out six to pick up her 11th and 12th win of the year.

Centenary (26-22-1, 9-5) will look take a series spilt with the Thunderbirds on Saturday with the second doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
