ROCHESTER, Mich- Centenary’ final twinbill of the regular season went down to the wire in both games as the Ladies finished the Mid-Continent Conference series 1-3 with Oakland on Saturday. The Golden Grizzles came from behind to win the opener in the bottom of the seventh and in the nightcap drove home five runs in the top of the first to sweep a doubleheader from the Ladies, 2-1 and 5-4 at the OU Softball Complex.

Jessica Ivins was masterful on the mound during the first game, holding the Golden Grizzles scoreless through the first five innings. The rookie, out of Houston Tex., struck out 10 OU batters while allowing just two runs.

The opener was a battle on the mound with both Ivins and OU’s Nicole Marzano performing well.

Centenary broke through in the sixth when Lindsey Jones walked and later advanced to second on Lory Kowaleski’s sacrifice. Jennifer Martin came up to the plate sending pinch runner Natalie Schoppe to third on an infield single. Centenary attempted their signature double steal, but Schoppe was thrown out at home. With Martin on third, Lauren Flowers walked putting runners on the corners. The Ladies went for the double steal again, pushing Martin home to take to 1-0 advantage.

Ivins shut down the Golden Grizzles once again in the sixth and struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, OU rallied as consecutive batters knocked out singles followed by Stephanie Zellner’s RBI single that tied the game. The next batter, Camie Knorr responded with the game winning shot to center field to end the game.

In the nightcap, Oakland batted around in the bottom of the first to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Davis Davis held the Golden Grizzles scoreless for the remainder of the game, while her teammates cut into the lead.

Jennifer Mango’s solo homerun in the fourth got the Ladies on the scoreboard as they kept up their offensive surge, rallying in the sixth to post three runs. Megan Hall’s shot to right field started the Ladies as Mango followed with a double before Brittany Broussard tripled to score both her teammates. Jones’s sacrifice fly plated the last run of the inning, bringing the game within a run at 5-4.

OU’s Laura Chomokos shut down the Ladies in their final at-bat to earn the win, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out eight Centenary batters.

Sophomore Davis (0-1) made her first collegiate start, going 6.2 innings while allowing five runs on seven hits.

Centenary concluded the regular season with a 28-26 overall record and finished league play 11-9, clinching the third seed in the conference tournament. The Ladies will look to repeat as Mid-Con Softball Champions as they travel to Kansas City, Mo., on May 13-14.
