SHREVEPORT – The Centenary baseball team completed a series sweep over visiting Chicago State at Shehee Stadium, making a second consecutive Mid-Continent Conference tournament birth theirs to lose.  The Gents’ 20-5 and 4-2 victories put them in a tie for third place at .500 (10-10 Mid-Con) with just a four game series at fourth place Valparaiso (8-10 Mid-Con) to go.  Centenary is guaranteed a trip to Tulsa if they at least split with the Crusaders.

The Gents (23-25, 10-10 Mid-Con) opened ‘Senior Day’ with a bang, bidding farewell to upperclassmen J.C. Biagi and David Kiefer with a 20-run salute.  Kiefer helped his cause by going 3-for-5 with three RBI and four runs scored.  Biagi scored twice while going 1-for-3 at the plate.

Jared Vincent added three singles while Alex Valdivia joined Kiefer with four trips across the plate.  Freshman Chris Wilson delivered a team-high four RBI as every starter collected a hit in the game and all but one scored.

Starter David McElroy (6-2) picked up the win with five innings of seven hit ball, giving up four runs.  Chad Harper the next three innings, giving up one run on three hits, before David Kees finished the scoreless ninth, fanning two.

The nightcap proved to be a lower scoring affair with the pitchers doing most of the work.  Brandon Fulenchek threw 4.2 innings of three hit ball but received little run support, walking six, and was replaced at 1-1 in the fifth.  Kris Calhoun (4-3) retired the next batter with runners on the corners to get out of the jam.  After picking up a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, Jonathan Christian finished out the game for his first save of the year.

Jonathan Ahearn, Kiefer, and Valdivia all collected a pair of hits in the win.
