Shreveport—Centenary men’s basketball coach Kevin Johnson has announced the hiring of Matthew “Mike” Smith as assistant basketball coach. Smith comes to Centenary after coaching at Southeastern Louisiana under former Centenary coach Billy Kennedy.

Smith helped Southeastern Louisiana to a 20-9 record and the Southland Conference regular season championship in 2003-04. He also coached at Brebeuf Preparatory Jesuit High School and Pearl River Community College prior to his stint with the Lions last season.

“We are excited to have Mike Smith at Centenary,” said Johnson. “He brings vast playing experience to our staff which will particularly benefit our post players.”

Smith played professionally for seven seasons in Europe, Asia, and the United States. He averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds over his professional career and finished as the league-leading rebounder in Turkey with an average of 15.6.

During his collegiate career, Smith was a starting member of the University of New Orleans basketball team that won the American South Conference in 1988. While at UNO, he also participated in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in 1988 and the NCAA Tournament in 1987.

“I am very excited to become a part of the Centenary family and it is my pleasure to work with Kevin Johnson,” said Smith. “I feel fortunate for the opportunity to aid in the development of young men, both on and off the basketball court. Coach Johnson has brought a spark of enthusiasm and integrity, which I will also bring to the program. As I continue to develop in coaching it is certainly a privilege to work at Centenary College and with Kevin Johnson.”
