Centenary Golfer Near Top of Amateur Event
Monday, August 2, 2004

Aurora, Ohio—The first round of the 74th Northeast Ohio Amateur Invitational (NEO) ended on Thursday with five-time champion Doug Hauenstein, 44, in first place with Joe Ungvary Jr., 39, and Centenary senior Brett Kaufman, 21, in a tie for second place just one stroke back.

Hauenstein was the only player in the field of 67 to shoot an even-par 71 while Ungvary and Kaufman each fired a 72 to keep the pace. Kaufman, who will serve as the team captain for the Gents golf team this year, is a native of Ohio. He is a member of the Red Tail Golf Club where the second round of the NEO will be played on August 5th.

Kaufman played with consistency and tallied four birdies in his opening round on Wednesday. That same focused play helped the Gents to a second place finish at the Mid-Continent Conference Championships in April.
