ELMHURST, ILL. — With the first semester of the 2004-05 academic year in the books, the Mid-Continent Conference has announced its Academic All-Conference Teams for the fall season. A total of 208 Mid-Con student-athletes from the sports of men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball were honored for their academic excellence.

Valparaiso led the way with a league-best 42 selections to the Academic All-Conference squad, edging out Centenary (30 recipients) for the top spot. Oakland landed 29 student-athletes on the academic list, followed by IUPUI with 25 recipients and Western Illinois with 24 selections. Oral Roberts (23), Southern Utah (15), Chicago State (11) and UMKC (9) also had student-athletes recognized for their academic achievements.

Of the 208 student-athletes that were honored, three have maintained perfect 4.00 grade point averages throughout their careers. Those student-athletes with perfect GPAs are Centenary senior Kylie Garrett (soccer), Oral Roberts senior Stephen McCarthy (soccer) and Southern Utah sophomore Ashley Smith (soccer).

In order for a student-athlete to be selected to the Academic All-Conference team, he/she must meet the following criteria: carry a 3.00 or better cumulative grade point average; achieve sophomore academic standing at the institution; and lettered in the sport in which he/she is nominated, in the season that corresponds with the selection of the award. Transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates must have completed one academic year at the nominating institution.
