Ladies Remain Winless in Mid-Con with 67-54 Loss to IUPUI
Saturday, January 22, 2005

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Looking for their first Mid-Continent Conference win of the year, the Centenary women’s basketball traveled to face IUPUI, the only other winless team in the conference.  The Ladies (1-14, 0-5 Mid-Con) played tough down to the wire, pulling within two in the final minutes of the games, but came up short 67-54.

Laura Kizyte led the Ladies with 20 points while Jelena Aleksic added 14 with seven rebounds.  Laura Way scored a career best 11 points off the bench and Van’esha Brabson pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

The Jaguars (3-14, 1-5 Mid-Con) took a quick eight-point lead through the first five minutes of the game on a trio of threes from Kia Hayes and a pair field goals from Jasmine Baines. Brabson answered with a three of her own, igniting a 9-2 Centenary run that pulled the Ladies within one.  Jessica James had other ideas for IUPUI, scoring eight consecutive points to increase the lead to 10 at the 9:12 mark.

Seeing their first double-digit deficit of the game, the Ladies battled back, holding the Jaguars scoreless for the next five and a half minutes while trimming the lead back down to three.  IUPUI’s defense clamped down in turn, allowing only one Centenary point in the final four minutes of the half.

Aleksic took control of the Ladies offense in the paint, dropping 11 first half points against Mid-Con shot block leader Brooke McAfee.  Aleksic added four rebounds in the first period while hitting 55.5 percent of her shots from the floor.

The Ladies looked to further trim the score in the second stanza, but IUPUI seemed to have an answer for every Centenary basket of the half.  Kizyte led the late game charge as her three-pointer with 3:30 left in the game pulled the Ladies within two.  After trading pairs of back-to-back free throws, the Jaguars pulled away thanks to stingy defense and solid shooting from the free throw line.

The Ladies return home to face Southern Utah on Monday, January 24 at the Gold Dome.  Centenary split their meetings with the Thunderbirds last year, falling 75-59 in Cedar City and winning 75-62 in Shreveport.  Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
