Southern Utah Slides Past Ladies in Nail-biting 70-61 Win

SHREVEPORT- With a rotation of only six, the Ladies overcame a twenty-four point deficit to go ahead of conference foe Southern Utah with 2:58 left in the second half. The nail-biting game went down to the final seconds with Southern Utah passing by the Ladies 70-61 in women’s basketball action on Monday night at the Gold Dome. Van’esha Brabson nabbed her second double-double of the season, with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Jelena Aleksic registered five rebounds and a career-high 23 points and six assists.

A solid offense based on double screens and hot scoring from the tip allowed Southern Utah (8-9, 4-2) to outscore the Ladies in the first half. The Thunderbirds tallied 46 points in the opening stanza, making 55.9 percent of its shots from the floor compared to Centenary’s 37.5 percent.

The Ladies (1-15, 0-6) trailed by 17 at halftime, but an impressive 19-0 run, beginning at the 11:16 mark allowed the Ladies to get back in the game and overtake the lead. Holding the Thunderbirds scoreless for over fourteen minutes, the Ladies took the lead for the first time, 61-58, courtesy of a series of threes from Laura Kizyte and Laura Way.

Southern Utah knotted the game at 61 with Janis Beal’s second triple of the night. A Centenary turnover allowed Southern Utah’s Cassie Warburton to drive the lane, drawing a foul. Warburton made the free throw, taking back the lead, 64-61, with 1:25 left. Centenary had a chance to tie it with an attempted shot outside the arc, but Southern Utah grabbed the defensive board and took it down the court, drawing another foul.

With 39 seconds left on the clock, the Ladies had an unfortunate turnover as the Thunderbirds kept the lead until the buzzer.

The Ladies outscored Southern Utah, by a 32-24 margin in the second half and held the conference foe to 5-for-24 shooting from the floor and 2-for-9 from beyond the three-point arc in the second period.

Centenary will continue its conference action, traveling to Macomb, Illinois, for a matinee contest with Western Illinois on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
