Ladies Hang Tough With Mid-Con Leader WIU, Fall 64-49
Saturday, January 29, 2005

MACOMB, Ill. – Coming off their two strongest Mid-Continent Conference showings this season, the Centenary women’s basketball team traveled to face undefeated conference leader Western Illinois.  Jelena Aleksic scored a career-best with 26 points, her second time in as many games, but it wasn’t enough as the Ladies fell 64-49.

Aleksic went 11-of-17 from the floor, adding six rebounds in 39 minutes of action.  Laura Kizyte joined her in double-figures with 12 points while nabbing five steals.

Despite a 15-point halftime deficit, Centenary (1-16, 07 Mid-Con) kept strong and refused to concede to the Westerwinds.  Aleksic dropped 18 of her 26 in the second stanza, helping the Ladies keep pace with Western Illinois (13-5, 8-0 Mid-Con), matching their offensive output to finish the game.

Five WIU players scored eight or more points, led by Rita Castans and Samantha Grier.  Rachel Reed capped the Westerwind’s participation with 27 minutes as Western Illinois spread their minutes through their entire bench, outscoring Centenary’s reserves 37-4.

The Ladies hung tough early, jumping to an initial three-point advantage and answering the Westerwinds point-for-point through the first nine minutes of the contest.  After knotting the game at 16 apiece at the 11:05 mark, WIU pulled away and outscored Centenary 20-5 in the final 10 minutes of the half.  Western Illinois held the Ladies scoreless for the final eight minutes of the first period.

The Ladies return home to face Oral Roberts on Monday, January 31 at the Gold Dome.  The Golden Eagles defeated Centenary 59-44 in Tulsa earlier this season.  Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
