SHREVEPORT- The Ladies softball team won their first game of the season during their home opener on Tuesday afternoon at the Centenary Softball Complex.  Centenary’s efficient offense, which accumulated five runs on seven hits, leaving only three on base, earned the Ladies the 5-4 victory over Southern Arkansas.   By beating the Lady Muleriders for the second consecutive year, Centenary now leads the all-time series 4-3.

Centenary’s defense held SAU scoreless for the first three innings, as the Ladies knocked in one run in the opening stanza and two more in the bottom of the third.  Sophomore Lindsey Virdell jump-started the two-run rally, belting a shot into the left center field gap. Senior Katie Harwick reached on a single, moving pinch runner Lauren Flowers to third. A wild pitch scored Flowers and advanced Harwick to third base. Jennifer Mango’s RBI single pushed Harwick across the plate, giving the Ladies the 3-0 lead.

The Ladies’ offensive onslaught continued into the bottom of the fifth as sophomore Megan Hall homered to center field, plating Mango.

SAU was able to knock in another run in the bottom of the sixth before Cassie Blackwood flied out to left field to end the rally.

With Southern Arkansas picking away at the lead and Centenary only three strikes away from the win, Head Coach Mark Montgomery sent senior closer Janis Kelley to the mound.

Trailing 5-2 in the top of the seventh, SAU fought back on the strength of Christina Joseph’s two-run double to right field. However, with the tying run at the plate and a full count, Kelley struck out Lindsey Haas looking, earning her first save of the season.

Taking the win in the pitching circle for Centenary was Kristan Morton (1-3) who gave up two runs on five hits, and struck out two in four innings.

The Ladies will travel to San Antonio to compete in their second regular-season tournament this weekend.  Other teams participating in the Fastpitch Express College Classic will be host school UT-San Antonio, North Texas, Texas A&M-CC, and UT-El Paso. The first pitch is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Friday when the Ladies take on North Texas.
