SHREVEPORT – Down one run in the bottom of the ninth, the Centenary baseball team rallied behind the heart of their order and won their season opener 5-4 over Loyola of New Orleans at Shehee Stadium.

Local product Jonathan Colgin’s (Airline HS, BPCC) hard hit single to right center clinched the come-from-behind victory for the Gents (1-0).

Alex Valdivia led off the bottom of the ninth, pulling off a slow rolling bunt down the third base line.  The subsequent overthrow by the Wolfpack’s (3-5) Brian Mason advanced Valdivia to second, putting a runner in scoring position with no outs.

Senior David Kiefer reached safely after his liner ricochet of the Loyola pitcher, putting runners on the corners for Tim Ryan, who came to the plate having already gone 2-for-2 with a triple and a pair of walks.  Ryan singled, tying the game at 4-4 with two runners on, and Colgin put the game away two batters later.

Newcomer Kris Calhoun gave up two early runs in the first and second innings but regrouped for a solid six-inning performance.  Striking out three, he held the Wolfpack to hitting only .190 from the plate.  David McElroy (1-0) picked up the win after a Loyola comeback in the ninth.

Ryan was exceptional in his Centenary debut, finishing the night 3-for-3 with a triple and a pair of singles.  His triple in the fifth gave him his first of two RBIs, driving in Jared Vincent to knot the game at 2-2.

After playing third last season, shortstop Kiefer seemed to have no problems with the transition from the hot corner.  He displayed his athleticism early, tracking down a deep blooper in the first and leaping to snare a high liner to end the third.  Offensively, Kiefer went 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice.

The Gents and Loyola play again tomorrow, February 12 at Shehee Stadium.  Game time has been changed from noon to 11 a.m.
