Gents Even Series Against UNI With 9-5 Win

SHREVEPORT- The Centenary men’s baseball team used a seven run sixth inning and a strong performance by it’s starting pitcher to even their series with visiting Northern Iowa with a 9-5 victory at Shehee Stadium.

 

Jonathan Christian (1-0) pitched seven and a third strong innings, striking out nine Panther batters en route to his first victory of the year.

 

Down one run going into the bottom of the sixth, the Gents (2-2) put a pair of runners on with back-to-back hits by Jonathan Colgin and Justin Darr.  In to pinch hit, Chris Wilson singled to center, scoring Colgin after an error by the UNI (1-1) centerfielder.

 

With the game knotted at 1-1, Centenary capitalized on two bases loaded hit batsmen and a bases loaded walk to push the lead to 6-1.  A sacrifice fly by Darr in his second at bat of the inning scored David Kiefer to cap off the inning’s scoring.

 

Jake Hansen, Northern Iowa’s starting pitcher, was impressive in his season debut, giving up just three hits while striking out eight Gents in five scoreless innings.  The Panther bullpen, however, couldn’t keep the up the momentum, giving up nine runs on seven hits and four walks with only one strikeout.  Eric DeJong (0-1) picked up the loss for UNI.

 

The Gents and Northern Iowa finish their series with a rubber match tomorrow afternoon at Shehee Stadium.  Game time has been changed to 4 p.m.
