PHILADELPHIA, Miss – Powered by two top three finishers, the Centenary men’s golf team claimed the Pizza Hut/BellSouth The Real Yellow Pages Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at the Dancing Rabbit Golf Club over a field that included six Mid-Continent Conference teams.  Senior Brian Grone shot a one-under-par 71 to win the rain-shortened tournament.

The Gents shot 298 as a team to tie North Alabama and force a playoff.  Although North Alabama won the playoff, they were ineligible for the victory because they are a Division II program.

Grone also won in a playoff by defeating conference foe Zach Guthrie, playing as an individual, of Western Illinois to claim his first victory of the season.  Sophomore David Viviano helped the Gent’s cause, shooting an even-par 72 to finish tied for third.

Mid-Con opponent IUPUI finished one stroke back from Centenary shooting 299 while Oral Roberts finished fifth at 303. Conference rival Western Illinois, who defeated the Gents by one stoke at the 2004 Mid-Con Championships, tied for sixth place with 304.  UMKC (309) and Chicago State (348) rounded out the Mid-Con’s participation, finishing 11th and 17th respectively.

Brett Kaufman finished tied for 17th with 75 and John Kizer shot 80 to finish tied for 51st.  Mackey Miles rounded out Centenary’s participation, shooting 83 to finish out of scoring consideration.

Other team finishes included SE Missouri State (299), Southern Illinois (304), Nicholls State (305), Lewis University (307), host Jackson State (308), Newman University (325), Morehouse (328), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (340), Alabama A&M (341), Southern (346), Prairie View A&M (366), and Alcorn State (391).
