SHREVEPORT – The Centenary baseball team won both games of their series opening doubleheader against visiting Mississippi Valley State at Shehee Stadium.  The Gents used two complete games by both their starters to win 5-4 and 7-4.

J.C. Biagi (2-2) took the mound in the first game, striking out four in seven innings of work.  The senior righthander allowed four runs on just five hits as the Gents committed three errors in the game.

A two-run homerun by Jonathan Colgin put Centenary (10-12) on the board first in the third inning.  David Kiefer doubled into left center before Colgin smashed his second homer of the season over the leftfield fence.  The Gents added another run with a double by Chris Wilson and a subsequent triple by Jared Vincent.

The Delta Devils (11-15) answered back in the fifth, scoring three runs of their own.  After walking the second batter, Biagi overthrew the first baseman on a pickoff attempt, advancing the runner to third.  Singling in the runner, MVSU collected their own triple to pull within one run.  The tying run came on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Mississippi Valley State pulled ahead in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.  With a man on second, the Greg Thomas laid a bunt down the third base line, flirting with foul territory before hitting the bag and skipping away towards the home bullpen.  The hit scored freshman Kyle Latiolais who just entered the game as a pinch runner.

Not to be outdone, Centenary loaded the bases with one out in the sixth with a single by Cam Feightner.  Hitless in the game, leadoff man Alex Valdivia singled to right field, scoring two for the game-winning RBI.

David McElroy (5-0) started the nightcap for the Gents and picked up his team-leading fifth win of the season.  The reigning Mid-Continent Conference Pitcher of the Week fanned six and walked just one in seven innings.

The Gents put runs on the board early, scoring three in the bottom of the first.  With Valdivia collecting one of his three walks in the game, Tim Ryan slapped a double into right center to the warning track for the first RBI.  Colgin looped a single to right for the second, and Kiefer narrowly slid under a tag at home on a Wilson infield grounder for the third run.

Centenary put four more in the scorebook in the fifth as Kiefer screamed a liner over the Delta Devils’ leftfielder’s head for a two-run double, scoring Valdivia and Ryan after both walked.  Mississippi Valley State walked 10 Gents in the second game.

The Gents look to complete their first series sweep of the year as the host MVSU for one last game at Shehee Stadium tomorrow at 12 noon.
