SHREVEPORT – The Centenary baseball team picked up it’s first series sweep with a 11-4 victory over visiting Mississippi Valley State in the third game at Shehee Stadium.  The Gents collected 14 hits to overcome five fielding errors on the day.

Sophomore Will Kaage (2-2) threw seven innings of four hit ball for the win.  He struck out three and gave up only one earned run before being relieved by Brandon Fulenchek for the final six outs.

The Gents (11-12) scored their first run early as Tim Ryan walked and stole second.  David Kiefer then beat out an infield grounder for a single, but the Delta Devils’ first baseman couldn’t handle the late throw by the shortstop to score Ryan.

Mississippi Valley State (11-15) answered by putting a run on the board in each of the next two innings.  In the second, Greg Thomas reached on a nicely placed bunt to the second baseman, advanced to second on a hit batsman, then stole third.  He scored on a sacrifice fly to right.  With two down in the third, right fielder Jonathan Colgin dropped a fly ball with a man on third to give MVSU a 2-1 lead.

Unphased, Centenary amassed five runs in their half of the third.  Ryan drew another walk and was immediately driven home by a Kiefer double into left center.  Justin Darr singled to put Kiefer on third as Colgin redeemed himself by singling home Kiefer in the next at-bat.  Freshman Chris Wilson cleared the bases with his second triple of the year and scored the fifth run of the inning on a sacfrifice fly to right by J.C. Biagi.

The Gents put two more runs in the scorebook in the fifth and seventh innings, and a single run in the eighth.  Mississippi Valley State scored again in the fourth and seventh.

Centenary has a week off before returning to action as the host Northwestern State at Shehee Stadium on Tuesday, April 5 at 6:30 p.m.
