Schmidt Earns Weekly Mid-Con Tennis Accolade

ELMHURST, Ill.- Centenary’s Anja Schmidt received Mid-Continent Conference Tennis Player of the Week honors for her exceptional play last week. Schmidt’s domination on the court continued as she recorded a pair of victories in the top slot against Alcorn State and Louisiana Tech. The junior advanced to 9-0 in spring singles play and leads the Mid-Con with 17 wins.

The Gilforn, Germany native took the Lady Braves top player 6-2, 6-2 and joined with her doubles partner Heather Kelley for a 8-4 win in No. 1 singles. Later in the week she defeated the Lady Techsters’ lead player, 6-3, 6-3 improving her overall record to 17-3.

This is the eighth time the junior has received the weekly accolade as she was named Mid-Con Player of the Week five times during the 2004 regular season. She was also honored with the 2004 Mid-Con’s Women’s Tennis Player of the Year award and was the co-winner of the Mid-Con Scholar Athlete Award for the 2003-04 season.

In two weeks the Ladies (2-9) will travel to Valparaiso, Ind. to participate in their first conference matches of the season. The Mid-Con cluster will include Chicago State, Oakland, and Valparaiso. The matches begin on April 8 and will be played throughout the weekend.
