Centenary Drops Louisiana Tech 7-4 to Earn Season Sweep
Wednesday, April 13, 2005

RUSTON—The Centenary softball team completed its season sweep of I-20 rival Louisiana Tech on Wednesday night by downing the Lady Techsters 7-4 on the road. The Ladies used timely hitting to capitalize on Louisiana Tech fielding miscues to come away with the victory.

Centenary (21-17) struck four times in the fifth inning to overcome a two-run deficit and take the lead 4-2. The scoring began with a one out solo home run to center field by Dana Davis. Jennifer Flowers followed with a single while Katie Harwick reached on an error by pitcher Lesl Aycock to put runners on first and second. Megan Hall promptly doubled to right center to plate Flowers and Harwick and scored two batters later when Tech third baseman Brittany Welch could not field Janis Kelley’s grounder.

Louisiana Tech (18-31) battled back with two runs in the bottom half of the sixth to knot the game at four apiece. With one out and Kristan Morton pitching in relief of Centenary starter Jessica Ivins, Christine Echols doubled to left center. After a hit batter put two runners on base, Morton forced Ashley Palma to foul out to left field. Rochelle Sandberg then came through with a single to push both Jessica Elson and Echols across the plate. Kelley entered the game to pitch for the Ladies and immediately ended the threat by getting Ashley Cameron out on a come-backer to the pitcher’s circle.

The Ladies responded in the top of the seventh as Harwick walked and stole second base to start the rally. After an infield single by Hall, Micah Rhodes doubled to left center to drive in Harwick. Pinch runner Jennifer Martin then scored on a passed ball that also advanced Rhodes to third base. Kelley helped her own cause, ripping a double to left center to give the Ladies the 7-4 lead that they would not relinquish.

Kelley (1-3) recorded her first win on the season with a perfect one and a third innings of work in relief. The senior did not allow a batter to reach base and retired the side in order to close out the seventh inning.

Kristin Rupp took the loss for Louisiana Tech and fell to 2-6 on the year after allowing three runs on three hits to go along with a pair of walks in 2.2 innings.

Hall led the Ladies offensively with a 2-for-3 effort that included two RBIs and a run scored. Rhodes’ game-winning double was one of two hits for the sophomore who also added a run and a RBI. Harwick managed her way around the base paths to score twice for Centenary while swiping her team-leading 14th stolen base in the victory.

The Ladies return home for a four-game conference series with Mid-Con foe UMKC this weekend. The action will start with a doubleheader on Friday at 4 pm and will conclude with another twinbill on Saturday at 11 am.
