Anja Schmidt

ELMHURST, Ill.- Centenary’s tennis ace Anja Schmidt was named Mid-Continent Conference Player of the Week for the fourth time this season for her incredible talent on the court. She continued her unbeatable ways remaining undefeated in spring and conference play over the weekend with five wins in the top slot, topping off her Centenary career at the Mid-Con Cluster hosted by Oral Roberts.

During last weekend’s three-day cluster, Schmidt overpowered top players from Oral Roberts (6-3, 6-2), Western Illinois (6-1, 6-2), UMKC (6-0, 6-0), IUPUI (6-3, 6-1), and Southern Utah (6-0, 6-2). Her remarkable play improved her overall spring record to 17-0. She also teamed with fellow junior Heather Kelley to beat four conference teams at No. 1 doubles.

This season she has posted an 8-0 record against league opponents and finished with a team-best 25-3 singles mark, including several matches against nationally-ranked opponents. She also posted a 13-8 dual record in first position doubles.

Her stellar play and consistency on the court has placed her into Centenary’s history book. Her rookie season ended pacing the Ladies with a 22-6 record. Her talent grew over the next year as her sophomore record of 23-2 resulted in a .920 winning percentage, which is the best single season effort of all-time. She also holds the highest career winning percentage of .864.

The 5’7’’ junior from Gifhorn, Germany, will complete her three-year career at Centenary ranking second in all-time singles wins with 25 single-season victories in 2004-05, right behind Jasmina Tonejc’s 1988-89 record of 26.

This is the ninth time the junior has received the conference weekly accolade as she was named Mid-Con Player of the Week five times during the 2004 regular season. She was also honored with the 2004 Mid-Con’s Women’s Tennis Player of the Year award and was the co-winner of the Mid-Con Scholar Athlete Award for the 2003-04 season.
