Gents Register a Pair of Losses at Conference Cluster
Friday, April 22, 2005

QUINCY, Ill.- Inclement weather forced a delay and a change in location at the Mid-Continent Conference men’s tennis cluster on Friday hosted by Western Illinois. The Gents dropped matches to league-foes Valparaiso and UMKC at the Quincy Racquet Club. The pair of losses drops the Gents to a 2-14, 1-4 record.

In the morning contest, Valparaiso (6-12, 3-1) won two of the doubles matches, taking the third by default to claim the doubles point.

Centenary went on defaulting the sixth singles spot to give the Crusaders the automatic lead. Valpo’s Nic Kooyers and David Bukowski registered wins at the No.1 and No. 5 spots respectively to earn the 4-0 victory.

In the second match of the day, Centenary battled UMKC (5-7, 4-0) to the edge in doubles. Brain Roberts and Russ Patrick posted their first league No. 1 doubles win over UMKC’s Richard Harrison and Grant Gelina, 8-5, but the Kangaroos were able to take the crucial No. 2 match for the point.

In individual play, Arthur Okura defeated Justin Ghani, 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 4 slot but, it wasn’t enough as UMKC’s top three players were able to seal the 6-1 triumph, recording wins in their respective matches to remain undefeated in conference play.

Centenary will return to the courts tomorrow morning for their final day of play at the conference cluster. The top four teams advance to the Mid-Con Championships next weekend in Indianapolis, Ind. to fight for the conference crown and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
