Tennis Comes Up Short in Dual Match Season Finale

MACOMB, Ill.- The Centenary men's tennis team dropped their final match of the season in a close 4-2 contest to conference rival Western Illinois at the Brophy Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Gents finish with a Mid-Con record of 1-5 and an overall record of 2-15.

The Leathernecks (8-10, 1-4) secured the point in the doubles portion of the match as Centenary forfeited the No. 3 pairing and WIU’s Justin Junck and Josh Wittenberg defeated Josh Pinto and Arthur Okura 8-2 at the No. 2 position.

In singles, Russ Patrick registered another win at No. 2 over WIU’s Sisay Selassie while teammate Arthur Okura bested WIU’s No. 4 in two easy sets, 6-1, 6-0. Despite the two wins, Centenary (2-15, 1-5) was forced to forfeit the No. 6 slot as the Leathernecks prevailed posting wins in the top slot and the No. 3 position to register a final score of 4-2.

Oral Roberts (11-12, 6-0 Mid-Con) took the Mid-Con regular-season title by finishing the conference season undefeated with a 6-0 mark. The Golden Eagles will face #4 IUPUI (3-13, 3-3) in the first semifinal match on Thursday followed by #2 Valparaiso’s (8-12, 5-1) match against #3 UMKC (5-9, 4-2) at the Indianapolis Tennis Center. On the Friday, the winners of each match will fight for Mid-Con top honors and for the chance to earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Men’s Tennis Tournament.
