MACOMB, Ill – The Centenary baseball team dropped both games of their opening doubleheader of a four-game series with Mid-Continent Conference foe Western Illinois, 4-2 and 4-0.  Four Gent errors in the first game led to the initial loss while the Leathernecks allowed just two hits in the second game shutout.

The Leathernecks (14-22, 5-1 Mid-Con) jumped to an early lead, plating two runs on two Centenary (16-17, 3-3 Mid-Con) errors in the bottom of the first.  The Gents answered back with a pair of runs of their own in the third on RBI doubles by David Kiefer and Justin Darr.

Western Illinois scored the eventual winning run in the fifth after starting pitcher J.C. Biagi loaded the bases with a back-to-back hit batsman and walk after surrendering a double to right field.  The Gents were unable to convert a one-out double play, allowing the runner on third to score.

Biagi (2-3) allowed two unearned runs on six hits in loss.  The senior fanned six batters en route to his third complete game of the year.  WIU’s Pat Kohorst (5-3) also struck out six in a complete game appearance.

Leatherneck starter Clint Buchen (4-1) allowed just two hits and a walk in the second contest.  Centenary pitcher David McElroy (5-1) recorded his first loss of the season after giving up four runs in the bottom of the second.  All four staring pitchers tossed complete games in the doubleheader.

McElroy allowed a leadoff triple in the second followed by an RBI single to right for the game-winning run.  After a walk and a hit batsman, WIU notched a two RBI single to right with the bases loaded and plated their fourth run on a wild pitch with runners on the corners.
