SHREVEPORT—Centenary long distance runners Michael Haydel and Lori Von Pingel have been named Mid-Continent Conference Cross Country Athletes of the Week by the league office. The pair of runners led their respective teams at the Northwestern State All-Comers meet held last weekend. It is the first award of such kind for either individual and is the first for the Centenary programs since joining the Mid-Con in the fall of 2003.

Bossier City’s Haydel (Parkway HS) had a strong showing in Natchitoches as he placed 14th among 42 participants on the 6k course with a time of 20:55.3 to help the Gents to a fifth place finish. The freshman has been Centenary’s top qualifier at every event this season.

Von Pingel, a sophomore from Madison, Miss. (Jackson Prep), garnered the weekly honor after a solid 21st place effort. She completed the 4k trek in 17:11.0 to extend her streak as the Ladies top individual in each race.

The Ladies and Gents will now set their focus on the Mid-Con Championships this Saturday. Both teams look to make waves in the conference meet, which is being hosted by Valparaiso University.
