LORMAN, Miss.—The Centenary volleyball team, fresh of its first ever Mid-Con win, drove on to the campus of Alcorn State Tuesday evening and easily discarded the Lady Braves 3-0 by the scores of 30-15, 30-16, 30-24. The Ladies continue to set new records for the volleyball program as sophomore Lindsay Bekelja surpassed her own single-season mark for assists and freshman Ashlee Freeman tied the single-season record for most block assists in the victory.

Centenary moves to 12-24 on the season with the win to double last year’s win total. With two matches remaining, the Ladies have a chance to win at least 14 matches for the first time since 1998 when the maroon and white toted a win-loss mark of 16-22.

The Ladies dominated Alcorn State in its home gym by using a strong service game and several blocks. Senior Tracee Byrd recorded three of Centenary’s nine aces while sophomore Shayla Andreas accounted for four total blocks.

Alcorn State (0-25) struggled to find an offensive rhythm all night as the Centenary blockers forced the Lady Braves to hit –0.40 for the match. In the meantime, the Ladies swung away and notched kill percentages above .300 in two of the three games.

Three Ladies tallied 10 kills to pace Centenary. Byrd’s 10 kills were added to five digs while Freeman also managed 10 spikes to go with a pair of block assists. The blocks give Freeman 74 on the season to tie the maroon and white record. Freshman Danielle Bochat turned in a 10-kill, 10-dig effort for her 11th double double of the 2005 campaign.

Bekelja dished out 32 assists to the Centenary hitters, setting the new single-season assist record at 1,223 and counting. The setter nearly missed a double double of her own as she finished with nine digs.

The Ladies will leave Thursday for Valparaiso and Oakland, the final two matches of the season. Friday’s match versus the Crusaders is set to begin at 7 p.m., as is the Saturday finale against the Golden Grizzlies.
