Forest, Gillespie Ink National Letters of Intent with Centenary
Wednesday, November 9, 2005

SHREVEPORT – Centenary women’s basketball head coach Elizabeth Wamsley has announced the signing of Louisiana products Leslie Forest and Samantha Gillespie to National Letters of Intent for the 2006-07 season.  The pair are the first early signings for Wamsley since taking the helm for the Ladies prior to last season.

Forest, a 6’3” center from East St. John High School in Reserve, La., brings much needed size to the Centenary frontcourt.  She averaged six points and seven rebounds a game last season, helping coach Troy Giordano’s Lady Cats to their second Sweet 16 appearance in the last three years.  Forest also set the school record for blocks in a game with 10 against Terrebonne High School.

“Leslie is young to the game of basketball,” Wamsley said, “but has tremendous potential.  She’s a hard worker with a solid skill set, and we expect her to become a major contributor in the future.”

Gillespie is a three-time All-District selection from Glenmora High School in Glenmora, La.  She averaged 21.4 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.3 steals per game as a junior, leading coach Robert Flowers’ Lady Wildcats to a state championship and earning All-State and State MVP honors in the process.  The 5’8” guard will bring another viable scoring threat to the Ladies rotation.

“A true competitor and proven winner, Samantha has very strong fundamentals and understands the game of basketball,” said Wamsley.  “She plays with a ton of heart and desire, and we are excited to have her bring that attitude to the team.”

Centenary opens the 2005-06 season at home against New Orleans on Saturday, November 19, at 1 p.m.
