CLEVELAND, Tenn--Former Centenary College assistant volleyball coach Brianne Smedley, in her first season as the head coach at Berry College in Mount Berry, Ga., was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Coach of the Year at the SSAC’s annual awards banquet in Cleveland, Tenn., Thursday evening.

Smedley, who spent the 2004 season on Centenary head coach Jenny Hazelwood’s staff, led the Vikings to a 24-8 regular season record and a No. 2 ranking in NAIA Region XIII in 2005.  Berry has also won its first two matches in this week’s SSAC Tournament to improve to 26-8 overall.

Smedley will lead the Vikes against Lee University, the tournament’s top seed after going undefeated in conference play, Saturday morning at 10 a.m. (EST) for the right to play for the conference championship.  Lee is the only conference team to defeat Berry this season.
