Michael Haydel

LAKE CHARLES, La.—Centenary freshman Michael Haydel has been named to the 2005 Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Cross Country Team. The newcomer for the Gents was the only freshman to be selected to the seven-man team. Patrick Gavin of LSU took home the Runner of the Year award while Frank Bwambale earned Freshman of the Year accolades.

Haydel (Bossier City, La., Parkway High School) provided an immediate impact for the Gents this season, finishing as Centenary’s top runner in all six meets. He recorded three top ten finishes, five top 15 finishes, and was named the Mid-Continent Conference Runner of the Week once. He shaved over 1:40 off of his 8k effort from the beginning to the end of the year when he notched his best time of 27:31.1.

The Gents were vastly improved this season with the help of Haydel. Centenary bested Northwestern State four times and placed in the top five as a team in five of their six meets with the freshman leading the way.
