THIBODAUX, La.—Nicholls State’s Stefan Blaszczynski pumped in 28 points in leading the Colonels over Centenary 89-80 in men’s basketball action on Thursday afternoon. The Gents could not find an answer for the junior from Sydney, Australia, and were outshot 56.1% to 42.4% from the field as a team. That proved to be the difference in the game as the Maroon and White outrebounded Nicholls State 37-29 while the two teams were just about even on turnovers, free throws, and three-point shooting.

Centenary (2-7) scored the opening basket of the contest and surrendered the lead only twice in the first half. The Gents extended their advantage to 11 points at 22-11 on a three-pointer by Bryan Baumann and again pushed the margin to double digits at 24-14 on a pair of free throws from Alexander Starr with 9:09 left in the half.

Nicholls State (3-7) answered with a 9-0 run over the next two minutes and then grabbed its first lead on a lay-up by James Dixon. The Gents responded with seven consecutive points to regain a five-point cushion and controlled the rest of the half until Blaszczynski’s basket made the score 41-39 in the Colonel’s favor at the intermission.

The opening minutes of the second half belonged to the home team as Nicholls State rattled off a 10-2 stint powered by eight more points from Blaszczynski. Centenary struggled to keep pace and the Gents quickly found themselves down 20 points at 72-52 with 7:35 to play.  Larry Logan turned up his aggressiveness and poised the Maroon and White for one last push. The junior poured in seven points over the next three minutes to fuel a 15-3 charge to bring Centenary within eight at 75-67.

The Colonels once again responded and kept the Gents at bay while Blaszczynski added eight more points down the stretch. E.J. Kusnyer and Xavier Burnette each drilled three-pointers in the final 45 seconds for Centenary to bring the final deficit to single digits.

Logan scored a season-high 16 points while grabbing eight boards in the loss for the Gents. Centenary featured five players in double figures as Burnette (12), Starr (12), Baumann (10), and Clarke Jackson (10) joined Logan in accomplishing the feat.

Adonis Gray added 17 points to Blaszczynski’s effort for Nicholls State. Ryan Bathie converted on 4-of-8 attempts from behind the arc for 12 points while Dixon finished with 11 for the winners.

Centenary will take a week off for the holidays and will return to the Gold Dome to open Mid-Continent Conference play against Valparaiso on Dec. 29th at 7 p.m.
