SHREVEPORT—Valparaiso outscored the Centenary Ladies 42-12 in points in the paint and out-rebounded the Maroon and White 45-34 in utilizing its size advantage for a 66-47 win Wednesday evening in women’s basketball action. The win improves Valpo’s Mid-Con mark to a perfect 3-0 while the Ladies fell to 0-2 in league play.

Centenary (1-12, 0-2 Mid-Con) suffered through one of its worst shooting halves of the season as the Ladies converted on just 14.8 percent (4-of-27) of their attempts in the first period. Valparaiso kept Centenary in the contest as the Crusaders were unable to put the game away because of a dismal 31.4 percent shooting effort of their own. Valpo dominated the boards in the first stanza 32-18 , which included 12 offensive rebounds. Betsy Rietema hauled in nine boards alone to lead the Crusaders to a 29-12 advantage heading into the break.

Valparaiso (8-5, 3-0 Mid-Con) pulled away in the opening minutes of the second half as the shooting effort from both teams drastically improved. The Crusaders continued to pound the ball inside to Tamra Braun and Rietema and built up a comfortable 27-point lead with eight minutes left to play.

The Ladies made a final push as they outscored Valpo 15-1 over a four-minute span powered by 10 points from Holli Wilkins. The junior came up with a pair of steals, made good on four free throws, and drilled two trifectas to pull Centenary within 13 at 57-44 with 3:46 to play. However, the visitors responded to hold on to the win.

Bruan led all scorers as she paced Valpo with 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting, all inside the paint. Rietema recorded a double-double with 14 points to go with 11 boards in the winning cause.

Wilkins led Centenary with 16 points, which included four three-pointers. She also finished with four assists, four steals, and six rebounds. Cierra Bush added six points and seven boards off the bench.

The Ladies return to action on with a Mid-Con road contest at UMKC on Saturday. Tip time is set for 4 p.m.
