SHREVEPORT – The Centenary women’s basketball team used an inspired outing from their starting five to end their 13-game long losing streak as they defeated visiting Southern Utah 76-67 at the Gold Dome on Monday night.  All five starters scored in double-figures, including a pair of career high performances, as they matched the school record for three pointers made in a game with 12.

The win is the first Mid-Continent Conference victory for the Ladies (2-15, 1-5 Mid-Con) since the 2003-04 season, and is the first league win for head coach Elizabeth Wamsley since taking over the program at the beginning of last season.

Junior Holli Wilkins led all scorers with a career-high 27 points, including 18 from behind the arc to tie a school record for threes made in a game with six.  Brittany Barbee matched her career-best 14 points, converting on six clutch free throws in the final two minutes of play.  Also scoring in double-digits were starters Jelena Aleksic, Van’esha Brabson, and Laura Kizyte with 13, 11, and 10 points respectively.

The Ladies began the game on a tear, jumping to an early 15-6 lead on the second of Wilkins’ six threes in the game.  Centenary would then put together a 26-6 run over the five minutes, including four of five threes made consecutively, to take a 24 point lead, their largest of the game.  Southern Utah would then clamp down, trimming the lead to 17 by halftime, to enter the break with a 45-28 Ladies advantage.

The Thunderbirds (7-10, 0-6 Mid-Con) were determined not to go down without a fight, however, and came out of the gate in the second frame on a 10-0 run to pull within eight.  Centenary would keep SUU at bay, not allowing their opponent to get within eight points until T-Birds leading scorer Cassie Hahl scored five straight to make it a five point ballgame with just under four minutes to play.  Wilkins would then take over almost immediately, scoring the next six Ladies points, capped by the team’s record tying 12th three pointer, to give the Maroon and White a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game.

Hahl led the T-Birds with 20 points as Charmaine Piula and Julie Stradling chipped in with 15 and 10 points respectively.

Centenary hits the road next as they travel to take on Oakland on Saturday as part of a doubleheader with the Gents, and then to Indianapolis for a rematch against IUPUI on Monday.  Both games can be heard locally on KSYR “Sunny” 92.1 FM and online at
