ROCHESTER, Mich. The Centenary women’s basketball team fell 78-63 to Oakland on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Center O’Rena.  Keeping it close initially, the Ladies couldn’t hold off the Golden Grizzlies offensive attack in the second half, as the host squad hit over 70 percent of their field goals in the frame and dominated the rebounding battle all game.

Holli Wilkins led all scorers, tying a career high 27 points in the loss.  She was joined in double-figures by Laura Kizyte and Jelena Aleksic with 14 and 13 respectively.  Wilkins also collected a game high six steals, almost twice her Mid-Continent Conference leading 3.29 a contest.

Things started off slowly for the Ladies after taking an early one point lead off a three pointer by Van’esha Brabson, falling behind by as many as 13 points and shooting less than 20 percent through the initial 10 minutes of the half.  Oakland would put together runs of 7-0 and 8-0, bookending a 5-0 Ladies run, to take a 23-10 advantage at the 7:25 mark.

Centenary (2-16, 1-6 Mid-Con) would respond, finding their shooting touch and sparking a 10-2 run, capped by Wilkins’ first three of the day to pull within five.  The Golden Grizzlies would then string together a 9-0 run to take another double-digit lead with less than two minutes to go, but Wilkins would score six of the half’s final 10 points, including a 25 foot three as time expired to cut the OU halftime lead to six.

The Ladies would keep things close initially in the second half, answering the Golden Grizzlies shot-for-shot and holding the lead to five through the first five minutes.  Oakland would take it from there, shooting a remarkable 70.8 percent in the half and leading by as many as 20 late.

Oakland (7-11, 3-4 Mid-Con) dominated the boards from the beginning, outrebounding Centenary 49-22, including 13-4 on the offensive glass.  Five OU players grabbed more than six rebounds, while only the Ladies Karolina Sokalska grabbed as many.

Anne Hafeli led the way for Oakland with a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing a game-best 11 rebounds.  She was joined in double figures by Jayme Wilson and Nicole Piggott with 19 and 17 respectively.

The Ladies continue their road trek as they travel to Indianapolis, Ind., to take on IUPUI on Monday night in a rematch of a 70-62 Jaguars victory earlier this season.  Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. CST and can be heard locally on KSYR “Sunny” 92.1 FM and online at www.SportsJuice.com.
