ELMHURST, Ill. – Two-time defending Mid-Continent Conference softball tournament champions Centenary has been picked to finish second in 2006 in the preseason poll comprising of the league’s seven head coaches.  The Ladies earned 32 points, including a pair of first place votes, just behind Southern Utah (35 points, 5 first place votes).  Head coaches could not vote for their own teams.

Finishing third was Western Illinois (23 points), followed by Valparaiso (20 points) and IUPUI (17 points).  UMKC (14 points) and Oakland (six points) rounded out the voting.

“It’s nice to be thought well of by our peers,” Ladies head coach Mark Montgomery said, “especially based on our performance the last two years in the league.  But, as good as it is to be ranked highly in the beginning poll, we’re aiming to be at the top of the Mid-Con at the end of the year.”

Now in their third season in Mid-Con play, Centenary has yet to drop a game in the conference tournament with a 6-0 record.  The Ladies back-to-back championships earned them consecutive berths to the NCAA Softball Regionals where they almost upended top-ranked Arizona in 2004.

Returning for the Maroon and White are six All-Conference selections, including the last two Newcomers of the year, Jennifer Mango and Micah Rhodes, both first-team selections in 2005.  Also back is sophomore pitcher Jessica Ivins and her 19 wins, 211 strikeouts, and 2.81 ERA.
