Gents Fall in Season Opener to #10 LSU

BATON ROUGE, La.—The Centenary men’s tennis team opened its 2006 campaign with a trip to Baton Rouge to take on the 10th ranked LSU Tigers on their home courts. The Tigers prevailed 7-0 by taking all six of the singles points as well as the doubles point from the Gents.

 

The afternoon started with Matt Shoptaugh and Seva Kostelanetz of Centenary falling in doubles action to Kevin Dessauer and Jonathan Tragardh of LSU 8-2. Shortly thereafter the Tigers #1 team of Paul White and James Cluskey discarded Russ Patrick and Josh Pinto 8-2 before Eric DeRoche and Jose Moncada completed the sweep for LSU by downing Dylan Dyer and Arthur Okura 8-1.

 

In singles action, Tragardh bested Centenary’s Kostelanetz 6-0, 6-0 from the sixth slot and Moncada came up on top of Russ Patrick 6-0, 6-1 playing in the third position. LSU’s top player, Ken Skupski, showed why he is ranked #66 in the ITA with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Pinto and Dessauer also won in the second spot over Dyer by the score of 6-1, 6-1. Rounding out the action with wins for the Tigers were William LeFevre (6-2, 6-2) and DeRoche (6-4, 6-4) from the fifth and fourth positions in the line-up. The combo defeated Centenary’s Shoptaugh and Okura in their respective slots.

 

With the win, LSU improved to 2-0 on the season while the Gents fell to 0-1. Centenary will next play on February 7th when the Maroon and White host Alcorn State in Shreveport at 2 p.m.
