SHREVEPORT – In a tale of two games, the Centenary baseball team came out with wins in both despite using very different measures to get there.  In the opener, the Gents pounded Jackson State 15-2 for an easy victory.  The nightcap proved trickier, as the Tigers out hit the Gents and scored early, forcing the Maroon and White to play from behind and stage a late inning rally to win 6-5.

Justin Darr collected three hits and three RBI on the day, including the game winner with the bases loaded in the second match-up.  Down five in the sixth inning of the seven-inning game, the Gents rallied to knot the score at 5-5 without earning a hit.  Darr would seal the victory after Jon Christian (1-0) picked up the win by tossing a scoreless seventh in relief.

Jackson State (3-3) walked 23 Gents batters on the day, including 13 in the opening loss.  Tim Ryan and Matt Webb each earned three free passes that led to three and two runs respectively.  Ryan also drove in a pair of runs, as did Darr and A.J. Howes, but Alex Maldonado’s three RBI were the best on the day.

After giving up two runs in the first inning, game one starter David McElroy (2-0) calmed down to pick up his second win of the year.  McElroy, the reigning Mid-Con Pitcher of the Week, gave up six hits and two runs in five innings of work.

The Gents (7-2) and Tigers play one more game this weekend, depending if weather permits.  Saturday’s game is tentatively scheduled for 12 p.m.
