MONROE, La. – The Centenary women’s soccer team kicked off their regular season slate with a 2-1 victory over Tennessee-Martin on Friday at the Louisiana-Monroe Waterfront Classic.  The Ladies have now won back-to-back season openers after dropping the previous six initial contests of the year.

Centenary proved to be the definition of efficiency on offense, collecting their pair of goals on just four shot attempts.  Conversely, the Skyhawks couldn’t find a way to capitalize on their 27 shots as freshman keeper Sarah Balkey provided a solid outing between the pipes.  Balkey grabbed eight saves on the day, allowing just one goal with less than 10 minutes to play in hot and muggy conditions.

Freshman Lauren Stanley scored what would be the game-winner in the 73rd minute, heading home a corner kick from sophomore Rachel Alexander.  The goal put the Ladies up 2-0 following Bre Fletcher’s lone first half goal with an assist from Katie Dougherty at the 34:34 mark.

UTM would put a goal of their own on the board in the 81st minute, but the Skyhawks managed just one shot on goal in the final 10 minutes, a save off a corner kick by Balkey with less that 60 ticks on the clock.

The Ladies return to Monroe on Sunday to take on Alabama A&M in their second match of the tournament.  The Bulldogs defeated host ULM in Friday’s nightcap, also by a score of 2-1.  Game time is set for 2 p.m.
