HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Centenary women’s soccer team continued their efficient and patient ways, defeating Sam Houston State 1-0 despite being outshot for the third consecutive contest.  The Ladies picked up their first program victory over the Bearkats in the two schools’ first meeting.

Sophomore Bre Fletcher took a long pass from senior Sam Savage, firing a goal from 11 yards out in the 78th minute for the only goal of the match.  The goal was a team leading second on the year for Fletcher.

Between the pipes, freshman keeper Sarah Balkey made another solid appearance, picking up her first collegiate shutout.  Balkey collected five saves on the evening.

Sam Houston State had 22 shots in the match, compared to the Ladies’ 15.  Centenary has yet to outshoot any opponent this year, but has maintained a 2-1 record, with their only loss on a last minute penalty kick against Alabama A&M.

Centenary has one road match remaining against Louisiana Tech before returning to the friendly confines of Mayo Field for a three game homestand.  The Ladies lost only one match in Shreveport last season, a close 2-1 battle with eventual Mid-Continent Conference champion Oral Roberts.  Centenary faces the Lady Techsters on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Ruston.
