LAFAYETTE, La.--The Centenary Ladies volleyball team improved to 3-4 on their young season with a 3-2 win over Jackson State in the final match of the Scott Clause Advertising Classic hosted by ULL. The Ladies used 13 aces and 12 team blocks to hold off the persistant JSU squad.

"We fought really hard tonight," said Centenary coach Jenny Hazelwood. "Jackson State came out ready to play and we had to work to stay focused in order to come out on top."

The Ladies took game one of the match 30-28 despite hitting at just a .086 percentage. After a hard-fought second game in which Jackson State prevailed 36-34, Centenary lost the momentum and allowed the Lady Tigers to also claim game three 30-21.

Ashlee Freeman and Tracee Byrd led the Ladies offensive attack to a 30-24
win in game four to force the fifth and decisive game. The Ladies then came through in the clutch, 15-11, to win their first five-game match of the season.

"Ashlee did a nice job both offensively and defensively for us tonight. Tracee also picked it up on the outside and was steady on defense," said Hazelwood.

Freeman rifled a team-high 14 kills in the victory while Byrd tallied 13 kills to go with 15 digs. The lone senior on the active roster, Byrd also led the Ladies with four aces. Danielle Bochat added 11 kills on the evening while Lindsay Bekelja piled up 39 assists.

Centenary's blocking attack received a big boost from Shayla Andreas. The sophomore recorded a block solo and five block assists to finish with six total blocks. Freeman posted a pair of block solos in addition to her four block assists to also accomplish six blocks of the Lady Tigers.

Jackson State (0-3) was the beneficiary of an outstanding performance by Verita White who turned in 20 kills, 17 digs and five aces in the losing effort. Mekisha Weaver added 14 kills for the Lady Tigers.

Centenary will return to Shreveport for some much-needed rest on Sunday before traveling on Monday to face Grambling State at 7 p.m.
