SHREVEPORT – The Centenary women’s soccer team kicks off their home slate of the 2005 season as they host in-state rival Northwestern State to Mayo field on Wednesday at 7 p.m.  The Ladies were 7-1 at home last season and defeated the Lady Demons 2-1 in overtime on the road in Natchitoches.

The Ladies are 2-2 on the season after dropping their last contest to Louisiana Tech 2-0.  Centenary has wins over Tennessee-Martin in the season opener and against Sam Houston State.  Head Coach Chase Wooten has solid aspirations for his young squad, but realizes that he can’t expect perfection too early.

“Our team is at a place where we’re still learning how to play together,” Wooten said. “I see us play great soccer for 20 minute stretches at a time, but we’re still looking to put it together for a complete game.”

Sophomore Bre Fletcher leads the Ladies in scoring with a pair of goals on the season, including the game-winner against SHSU.  Senior Sam Savage, a two-time first-team All-Mid-Continent Conference selection, is second on the squad with three points (one goal, one assist).

The Lady Demons are 2-1 on the year after falling to Louisiana-Lafayette 1-0 on Friday.  NSU was slated to take on Alcorn State on Sunday, but the game was postponed because of power outages resulting from Hurricane Katrina.

“I think Northwestern will be a good test for us,” said Wooten.  “They have good speed and athleticism, and should prove a solid challenge.”

Centenary will continue their home play as they host Texas State on Friday and Southern Miss on Sunday.
