SHREVEPORT – The Centenary women’s golf team finished the first round of the 6th Annual Centenary Ladies Spring Invitational in seventh place with a team score of 337.  Freshman Jessica Garza is tied for fifth place after shooting an opening round 77.


Garza shot a 37 on the back nine, tied for the third best half on the day, to match her beginning 40.  Sophomore Chloe’ Mims shot matching 41s to finish tied for 16th at 82 while Tracy Williams is tied for 28th with an 85.  Leigh Newton celebrated her birthday by shaving 11 strokes off her front nine 52 to finish tied for 50th at 93 and Bethany Cox carded a 106 for 61st.  Playing as an individual, Lizzie Lyles shot a 113 to finish the day in 64th place.


Defending champions Oral Roberts claims three of the top five places, including leader Christy Carter at 74.  Hillary Zeigler of Lamar and Tara Watters of New Orleans are tied for second at 76, while ORU’s Sharon McAlpine and Garza are tied fifth with 77.


Oral Roberts leads all teams at a comfortable lead with 306, ahead of a competitive field that is separated by less than 10 strokes between second and sixth place. McLennan CC sits second with 322, just ahead of Lamar in third with 324 and New Orleans and Louisiana-Monroe tied in fourth with 325.  Texas State is just behind the pack in six with 333 while Centenary is in seventh with 337, Nicholls State eighth with 343, and Jackson State ninth at 348.  Arkansas Tech (362), Rhodes College (374), Chicago State (387), and IUPUI (388) round out the competition.


Tuesday’s final round will begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start.  Weather is expected to be in the mid-70’s with clear and calm skies.
