SHREVEPORT – In a showdown between the top two freshman golfers in the Mid-Continent Conference, Oral Roberts’ Christy Carter defeated Centenary’s Jessica Garza in a two-hole playoff at the 6th Annual Centenary Ladies Invitational at the Shreveport Country Club.  Garza posted the best score of the second round with 76 to force the playoff with the first day’s leader.

Garza’s (77-76, 153) put from the fringe in the second playoff hole lipped out, allowing Carter (74-79, 153) to sink a six-footer for the victory.  In full control of the fast greens all day, Garza’s luck finally ran out as she missed a four-foot putt that would have closed the door for the win in the first playoff hole.

Sophomore Chloe’ Mims shot an 81 to go with her first day 82 to finish tied for 16th at 163.  Tracy Williams (85-88, 173) tied for 36th, while Leigh Newton (93-92, 185) and Bethany Cox (106-98, 204) finished 56th and 61st, respectively.  Playing as an individual, Lizzie Lyles shot 113 and 102 to finish tied for 63rd at 215.

As a team, the Ladies matched their first round score of 337 to finish in seventh, the position they came into the second round in.  The Maroon and White knocked in seven birdies, third best in the Invitational.

In team scoring, Oral Roberts (625) won by almost 20 strokes despite adding 13 to their first round score.  Second was a battle between McLennan CC (644), Lamar (646), Louisiana-Monroe (649), and New Orleans (652).  The next tier included Texas State (660), host Centenary (674), Nicholls State (680), and Jackson State (687).  Rounding out the competition was Arkansas Tech (699), Rhodes (752), Chicago State (763), and IUPUI (766).
