Gents Soccer Announces 2006 Signings
Monday, March 20, 2006

SHREVEPORT – Centenary men’s soccer head coach Eric Mayo has announced the signing of seven new players for the 2006 season.  Mayo bolsters the Gents squad that loses just three seniors with a pair of college transfers and five high school players.

Joining the Gents in 2006 will be transfers John Marquart (Huntsville, Texas / Jacksonville University) and Gabriel Silvas (Euless, Texas / Hartwick College) as well as incoming freshmen Mouhamed Assi (Spring, Texas / Klein Collins HS), Cole Campbell (Colleyville, Texas / Grapevine HS), Todd Faulkinberry (Bossier City, La. / Parkway HS), Stephen Rifai (Spring, Texas / Klein HS), and Sam Robinson (Houston, Texas / Cy-Fair HS).

“I am very excited to have these recruits join us at Centenary,” Mayo said. “I believe this is a very good class and they will contribute to our program immediately.  They are proven winners with their club and high school programs.  Each of these players fills an important need for us and it will be fun to see where they take us over the next four years. “

Marquart is a 6’2” central defender who comes to Centenary from Jacksonville University.  He is an athletic defender with extended experience after playing summers with the Fort Worth Tornados of the Premier Development League.  Marquardt was named to the Atlantic Sun Conference All-Freshman and All-Academic teams in 2004.

“John is player that I am very excited about.  He is a hardworking player with solid technical and tactical abilities, and I expect him to come in and lead our back four.”

A 5’5” midfielder/forward, Gabriel Silvas transfers to Centenary from Hartwick College.  Silvas was an All-District performer at Colleyville Heritage High School, earning second team honors in 2004 and first team accolades in 2003 and 2005.

“Gabe is another transfer player who brings NCAA tournament experience to our team.  He is very creative with the ball and tactically very knowledgeable.  Gabe brings in some different attributes that we have been missing and will compliment current forward Ben Caldarera up top very nicely. I think their partnership could bring a lot of goals in the next couple of years.”

Assi is a 5’11” central defender who comes to Centenary from Klein Collins High School in Spring, Texas.  A first team All-District selection as a senior, he was also a four-year letterman, earning All-District, All-State, and All-Region honors as a junior.

“Mo is a big physical center back who, with his physical presence, can shut down opposing forwards.  Not only is he big and physical, but he is also good technically and is an outstanding passer of the ball. He will help bring depth to an area that needs immediate improvement.”

Adding depth to the keeper position, 6’ Goalkeeper Cole Campbell joins Centenary from Grapevine High School in Colleyville, Texas.  Campbell will add another capable body to the join 2005 NCAA saves leader Donnie Henderson between the pipes.

“Cole is a good signing from the Everton Soccer Club out of Dallas.  He is very athletic and an extremely brave goalkeeper.  Cole will help give us more depth at the goalkeeping position and push our current players to continue to improve.”

Todd Faulkinberry is a local product out of Parkway High School in Bossier City, La.  A 6’1” midfielder/forward, he was selected first team All-District and was named All-City by The (Shreveport) Times as a junior and senior.

“I am very excited about Todd.  He is another local signing in consecutive years and brings a lot of athleticism.  Todd is very versatile and can play at forward or anywhere in the midfield.  I expect very good things from the Parkway standout.”

A 5’10” midfielder/forward, Rifai joins Centenary from Klein High School in Klein, Texas.  Riafi was a member of the 2005 Texas state championship team and his Bearkats are currently ranked as the top team in America.

“Stephen is a great signing for us.  He is very versatile with the ability to play in different positions.  He brings a winning attitude after helping lead storied Klein High School to another state championship in 2005.  He is also well on his way to winning another in 2006 while currently ranked number one in the nation.”

Mayo returned to his prep roots to find Robinson, a 5”8” midfielder/forward from the Gents head coach’s alma mater, Cy-Fair High School in Cypress, Texas.  Robinson was a second team All-District performer as a sophomore and a first team selection as a freshman and a junior.

“Sam is another fantastic signing.  He is very dynamic and should have an immediate impact on our team.  He is very versatile and is extremely fast and athletic.  Sam comes from an extremely successful club program in the Texas Soccer Club where he helped lead them to Nationals in 2005.  He will give us the service from the flanks that we have been missing.”
