ITHACA, NY- Three Centenary Ladies earned All-America honors at the 2006 USA Gymnastics Collegiate Nationals by finishing in the top eight of their respective events during the preliminary round.   Julia Cornelius scored a 9.750 on the beam to place seventh Meredith Smith placed eighth on the vault with a score of 9.650, and Kristina Menne earned her third consecutive All-America honor with a 9.725 on the floor for fifth place.  Menne also finished second in the All Around with a 38.400, earning her additional All-America accolades as well.

The Ladies as a team finished in sixth place overall, eliminating them from team contention for the national title they won two years ago on the Cornell University campus.  Cornelius, Menne, and Smith, however, will go on to compete for individual honors on Saturday.

“I’m proud of our performance today,” Ladies head coach Bill Hardy said after the day’s events. “Six straight years in the championships, including our big win two years ago, along with our girls’ All-America honors year-after-year just shows the impressive drive and determination of our Ladies.  And, it’s not over yet.”

Drive and determination are perfect words to describe Menne, a three-time All-America who was almost unable to compete in the day’s events.  Suffering from flu-like symptoms the night before competition, including a trip to the hospital for IV fluids, Menne gathered her strength to perform at the highest level she’s known to produce.

Menne finished second in the All-Around just 0.050 points behind leader Michelle Kulovitz of California-Davis, posting fifth in the floor, 10th on bars (9.525), 12th on beam (9.700), and 33rd on vault (9.450).  No other competitor scored over 38.00 in the All-Around, 0.400 points behind the top two.

2005 All-America Sarah Ball finished just out of the top eight in the All-Around, finishing 13th (37.125) with scores of 9.650 in the vault for 14th, 8.950 in the bars for 45th, 9.100 in the beam for 47th, and 9.425 in the floor for 35th.

Other highest scores for the Ladies included a 12th place floor finish for Smith with 9.625, a 17th place vault finish for Carmen Reid with 9.625, and a 24th place showing for Bethanie Bowie on the beam with 9.600.  Mandy Bennett placed 30th in the floor exercises with a score of 9.525 while Kristen Cox scored an 8.450 on the bars to finish 55th.
