SHREVEPORT—The Centenary softball team will welcome Western Illinois to town for a two-day, four-game Mid-Continent Conference series starting Friday. The match-up could be a preview of the opening round game in the conference tournament held in Cedar City, Utah, next weekend.

Centenary (30-22, 12-8) has not played for two weeks after rain forced the cancellation of its mid-week game with Louisiana Tech and the Ladies had a bye weekend from league play. However, the Maroon and White did take three of four games from Valparaiso in its previous action to remain in second place.

The Ladies are led by the dangerous hitting duo of junior Micah Rhodes and freshman Emerald Doria. Rhodes ranks 23rd in the NCAA in batting average with a sizzling .433 mark while Doria is 29th in the nation with .90 runs per game. The Centenary sluggers appear in the top five of various Mid-Con offensive categories 17 times including hits, homeruns, runs, slugging, and on-base percentage.

Western Illinois (19-30, 11-8) is just a half game back of the Ladies in third place and will look to gain ground this weekend. The Westerwinds will rely on the arm of three-time Pitcher of the Week Kamren Ferguson who leads Mid-Con play with a 1.36 ERA. WIU took three of four games last weekend from Valpo.

Rain and inclement weather is expected both Friday and Saturday and could make the series one that will hinge on execution. The Ladies are 7-4 all-time against Western Illinois.

Friday’s doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. while Saturday’s twinbill will start at 2:30 p.m. Log on to Centenary’s official athletics website for updates on cancellations or postponements as the weather dictates.
