SHREVEPORT The Centenary baseball team defeated visiting Valparaiso 8-1 in the opening game of a doubleheader before torrential rain and lightning forced the suspension of the second game until Sunday.  The nightcap was tied 5-5 going into the eighth inning when it was called.

Gents (19-25, 7-8 Mid-Con) starter Brandon Fulenchek (3-6) pitched a gem in the opener, tossing seven innings of one-run ball.  The junior southpaw allowed just four hits while striking out three.  Kris Calhoun and Derek Bross finished out the game without allowing another run to score.

Jimmy Baker and Justin Darr combined for five hits and five RBI, while Justin Huff and Torey Williams each added a pair of base knocks.   Williams and Matt Webb each scored twice in the opener.

The nightcap, suspended at 5-5 going into extra frames, will be continued Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.  Sunday’s originally scheduled doubleheader will follow, including a Senior Day celebration to honor the Centenary career of six seniors; Calhoun, Jon Christian, Cam Feightner, A.J. Howes, Tim Ryan, and Alex Valdivia.
